3 Things the Printing Companies Don’t Tell You

Sometimes I wonder if those who work in the field of sheet-offset printing have the interest or not to share their knowledge and skills with their customers. In fact unfortunately a lot of professionals – even with decades of experience as designers or publishers – do not know practically anything about the printing processes. It’s not indeed their fault, but why does this happen?

Mainly because printing companies, even important, with whom these people have collaborated in the past:

  • believe that hiding their know-how to customers may force them to be tied.
  • have sales men who do not have enough technical skills or support.
  • have sales men who work lazily with no interest in their work.
  • try to increase the turnover as much as possible having no interest then to show to the client alternative ways, cheaper and technically more logical or rational.

That’s recurring. Frankly, I’m both disappointed and happy: disappointed because I don’t like this way of working, happy because I don’t belong to any of these “categories”.

But what exactly are the things that printers do not usually tell you?

These three could be useful for you:

  1. in some cases, it’s enough a size change of few millimeters to save up to 30% on the total amount. It doesn’t look bad, does it?
  2. not every paper is always available, especially for small quantities. Wouldn’t it be better if you can set from the start your project by adapting your design and technical choices to the materials will be actually used?
  3. a successful chromatic final result depends for 75% on what happens before going to press. Do you guess why?

These are not little things, I know. I intend therefore to dedicate a post to each of them, I’m sure it will be very interesting and useful for the setting of your future projects!
